about

"The title of the album expresses the connections between the different styles that we and combine, from heavy rock to soul passing through R&B or some influences of country", he explains to Efe, that during the years he has divided his time between Hazy Malaze and Ryan Adams & The Cardinals.

Since the dissolution of The Cardinals in 2009, Casal has dedicated himself exclusively to Hazy Malaze, whose latest studio album is classified as "the rockiest" in the band’s history. "I think it’s our strongest album and the composition is, by far, the best of our three records", he affirmed.

As if it was a journey through the country of barriers and stars, "Connections" is plagued with references to the road. "Now I read these lyrics about travelling and the constant movement and I think of the good that they reflect in my life over the past five or six years, in which everything was a little temporary", Casal reminisces.

Although noted for his romantic songs, the singer considers that this album "not about love". "Some songs might sound very emotional, but were written with few thoughts of love", Casal reflects upon the theme of the album in which he plays with "open lyrics and free interpretation".

"I’ve always thought it is more positive, that each listener picks the song and makes it their own, applying it to their own ideas and experiences", the musician from Denville (New Jersey) points out, that if it coincides with the presence of "anger and frustration" in the ten tracks on "Connections" (Naïve).

"Get free", "Scavengers", "Time is not on our side" or "Josephine" are a few of the compositions that, in the word of Casal, "reflect the exciting influence of New York". "I was living there while we were working on the album, and it was a very creative period in which you could feel the energy of the city."

Bathed by a dark atmosphere and of a certain depressive tone, "Connections" is an album in which the only light shed is from the song "Amazing colors". "This album is not that of one sole emotion, and that is why I wanted to finish it on a more positive note", Casal details.

The songwriter states that "this little liberation" makes "Connections" "a more dynamic, interesting and rounded" album. "This is no AC/DC album, there is something more than fury, and ´Amazing colors´ represents an unexpected dimension, which goes very well with the album".

A restless spirit, Neal Casal is a multi-disciplined artist and a lover of photography, which is explained in great length through “Ryan Adams & The Cardinals: A View of Other Windows” a book that was published a few weeks ago. "It’s a photo album that I took during the Ryan Adams & The Cardinals years, and offers a unique point of view of the life of the group."
